Lauren Dow Featured on She Rose Revolution

The good news just keeps on flowing, and my cup is running over.

A few weeks ago, I was asked by Shani Jay of She Rose Revolution to contribute to their blog to talk about my eating disorder and what my recovery journey has been like.

Today I received an email saying that my most recent article has been highlighted as a feature on their website.

To some, this may seem like a small victory, or at least to those who work in the digital marketing world as a writer. But to me, it means literally everything.

A year ago, I would have told you that there was no way in the world I would be as far along in my recovery as I am now. That I would be a writer. That I would even be alive. Dark, I know. But it’s the honest truth, and I’m all about being completely transparent with myself and with the people who take the time to read what I write.

Writing has completely changed my life. It’s something that I’ve always done, but over the last several months, it’s become more than just a hobby or something I do in my spare time. It’s become my life.

Timmy read this to me this morning and I thought it was incredibly pertinent to where I am, what I am feeling and experiencing in my life, and I wanted to share it with all of you too.

“Another person’s words are the windows to his or her world, through which I see what it is like to be that person. When another speaks to me in truth, he or she becomes a transparent self, and releases in me an imaginative experience of his or her existence. If he or she cannot speak, if I do not listen, or if I cannot understand then we must remain suspicious strangers to one another, uncognizant of our authentic similarities and differences.”

In the most perfectly stated way, this is exactly what I want and try to accomplish. A window into what it means to walk in the shoes of Lauren Dow. To understand with some form of empathy into my truth, my existence of life with mental illness. Only then will I be able to feel like my true, authentic self.

Besides, why would I want to wander this earth being anyone but me?

I’m a different person now…well, maybe not different.

I’ve grown. I’ve healed. I’ve expanded. I’ve listened to the inner dialogue within myself and have made the conscious effort to act instead of allowing myself to be passive with what drives me every day.

Since doing that, everything else in my life has unfolded in a way I would have never expected. Also because I have stopped believing in expectations these days. It makes the little things be that much greater.

If you are not a writer, I strongly encourage you to get yourself a journal or a notebook. Take the time to write each day, even if it’s only one sentence that summarizes what you are feeling, thinking, or living. It’s important to take time to reflect on what is going on inside of you. Because merely thinking about something is not enough. Putting it out into the universe, even if only for yourself, is a way to make something tangible. More real for you to face or appreciate, depending on if you need to confront something or find a way to give gratitude towards another.

Challenge yourself.

Write one thing today. However long it may be or whatever it might be about. It doesn’t matter. Just write one thing.
